135cm monster cod
  |  First Published: January 2010

Lake Mulwala has been fairly dirty, making things a bit harder for the lure fishos while the bait boys have been picking up fish more regularly.

There were numerous great Murray cod reported and none better than the absolute monster landed by David Bumpstead and Bob Peric.

They had fished the Cod Classic but decided they wanted another day’s fishing with a bit less boat traffic before they went home and what a decision it was!

David and Bob landed the largest fish I have ever seen come out of Mulwala, measuring a whopping 135cm and estimated to weigh around 50kg.

This beast was taken on a trolled 120mm fluoro pink AC lure and was released so some other lucky angler might have the pleasure of tangling with it one day.

Next-best fish was landed by George Jovanovic, among the most productive ‘big fish’ local anglers, who picked up a beautiful 123cm model on the troll around the Woodlands area. It took one of his son’s home-made lures and was released.

Rod Groaters backed up his effort of guiding the winner of the Cod Classic with his own 88cm cod on a cast Bridgewater spinnerbait.

I spent a couple of nights fishing the surface with good mate Dean Goodsell and my young fella, Cooper. Between us we managed to land three to 64cm on poppers and buzzbaits.

About 100 anglers took part in the Engel Fish-A-Rama between Christmas and New Year. Mick ‘Mr Consistent’ Miller landed a 70cm cod to take out the adult champion prize while Mate Colina landed a 68cm to win the juniors.

BAIT PICKERS

Many small fish were taken by those using bait below the weir.

Silver perch have moved into the area and along with small trout cod, can become real pests as bait pickers. I recommend a bait sock made by SMH Angling Solutions that will save you a heap of money on bait.

A few young locals, Reed, Eli and Josh, lucked upon a hot bite over Christmas and landed 25 cod to 61cm between them in three hours on spinnerbaits.

Over the next month or two the lake will clear up and those who put in the early morning starts to avoid the ski boats will be rewarded.

Casting and trolling hardbodies, spinnerbaits and lipless crankbaits will provide the best chances. On calm, warm nights you could be rewarded with a cod or two off the surface, especially in the Kiffins area.

Places are still available for the Lowrance Da$h 4 Ca$h Super Series on February 20 and 21, call me at Lake Mulwala Fish Camp & Ski to book yours.
