Endangered Mary River Cod Catch
  |  First Published: March 2003

THIS PHOTO depicts a concerned Gympie resident with a female Mary River cod carcass. He found the fish on the bank of Six Mile Creek, near Gympie, shortly after Christmas.

The cod was found with the fillets removed in an area where set lines have previously been found. This lengthy shaded reach of Six Mile Creek has a number of deep pools ideal for cod. With low water levels, movement of cod along creeks has become restricted, making them an easier target for fisherman.

Landholders in the area where the carcass was found were questioned and appeared to be aware that catching Mary cod is illegal. Subsequently, nobody owned up to the catch.

Being in possession of Mary River cod is punishable by a heavy fine. To report suspect fishing activity phone the FishWatch hotline on 1800 017 116. – MRCCC.
