Sunshine Coast Longtail Tuna Chase
  |  First Published: June 2005

The weather gods certainly had it in for the Sunshine Coast Saltwater Flyfishers Association this year, as a strong wind warning cancelled our two-and-a-half day comp planned for April 8, 9 and 10.

Not to be outdone, we scheduled a shortened comp for the following weekend where we only had to fish in 20-knot winds, and 26 intrepid flyfishers caught and released exactly 100 tuna in one-and-a-half days of fishing!

The bridesmaid from the previous couple of years, Steve Dahl, stepped up to take out the Champion Angler Award with one longtail tuna and 16 mack tuna. Runner-up David Reverdito has 20 mack tuna, and Brock Klar caught his first tuna on fly to take out Champion Junior Angler. Champion Team was won by Kim Strathearn and Carl ‘Snow’ Bernard with 33 mack tuna. Our ‘Crazy Charlie’ Award was won by Frank Redpath.

As in previous years, every competitor received a prize, thanks to the generous support by the competition sponsors.

Everyone is looking forward to next year’s event, and hopefully a bit of a break in the wind! Kim Strathearn
