Col Singleton claims Wivenhoe title
  |  First Published: June 2005

Brisbane’s Colin Singleton outclassed the opposition by claiming a hard-earned and close victory at Wivenhoe Dam BASS Electric.

Col bagged out early and continued to catch quality fish all day to accumulate an incredible 4.8kg of bass. Only 50g separated Col’s best fish (2.45kg) from Big Bass winner Peter ‘Carrot’ Keidge’s 2.5kg horse.

Colin said he used long casts to steep rocky banks and points and submerged structure. His lure of choice was the Bassman spinnerbait, retrieved ultra-slow with regular pauses.

“Most of my fish took the bait on the pause,” he said.

Peter Keidge adopted a similar style of retrieve using a silver and purple Jackall lipless crankbait. He fished along a bank in about 16 feet of water and agreed that most of the fish were hitting his lure on the pause.

Even though the day started badly, with the weather closing in, it turned out to be Wivenhoe’s most successful ABT event ever. In stark contrast to last year’s tally of just three fish, the 2005 round ended with 34 fish caught by the 39 anglers. The excellent quality of the bass caught and the ever-present possibility of a 4kg monster, will encourage anglers to attend the next Wivenhoe event.
