Toonumbar BASS electric

On a brisk winter’s morning and with heavy fog rolling in, nine boats hit the water full of anticipation of the fishing on offer on the tough northern NSW waterway, Toonumbar Dam.

Nine fish were delivered live to the scales, with only three anglers weighing in a full limit of two fish. Event winner Ray Power claimed the overall winner's prize for his 2/2, 1.9kg bag, anchored by the event’s Big Bass, which was an outstanding 1.1kg specimen.

Fishing a 1⁄4oz jighead rigged with a 3” Zoom Fluke (albino), Power presented his offering against the rock face shoreline, before allowing it to sink to a depth of around 5-6m. Once there he retrieved it to the rod tip with a slow jigging retrieve.

Second place was secured by BASS Electric regular Adrian Melchior, also weighing in a 2/2, 1.9kg limit. Catching 15 fish for the session Melchior could find the numbers, but not the size to overcome event winner Power who won on a countback by virtue of the event’s Big Bass.

Melchior by contrast compiled his limit using a purple Jackall TN60, presented across the top of flooded weed beds with a burn and kill retrieve.

The event once again provided five qualifiers for the MotorGuide BASS Electric Convention in September, and with four more qualifying rounds to go for the season there’s still plenty more chances to qualify for the final event of year.
