2008 Port Hinchinbrook Fishing Classic
  |  First Published: September 2008

The 2008 Port Hinchinbrook Fishing Classic is a popular north Queensland event that is being held again from September 17 - 21.

This four-day event continues to grow every year, so much so that in 2007 there were 58 vessels competing for the $50,000 in cash and prizes. 2008 will be the 7th annual Fishing Classic, now established as one of the most prestigious fishing tournaments in Australia. There are two sections in the tournament, both with individual entries and prizes up for grabs.

Division One is for marlin and sailfish where anglers will fish 6kg line in a tag and release only format. In Division One anglers and teams compete for the daily tag and release prize of $3000. There are overall prizes too with the Champion tag and release team netting themselves a cool $20,000 and the runners up connecting to $5000.

Division Two is an inshore division where teams and anglers will target species such as queenfish or trevally, mackerel, tuna, cobia, mangrove jack, barramundi, grunter or javelin fish, salmon, red emperor, coral trout, nannygai and fingermark. Prizes in Division Two include $100 per day for the biggest in each species and $500 for the heaviest overall fish of each species.

Entry fees include a tournament shirt and cap. Welcome dinner and drinks, themed dinner and entertainment on Thursday night and a presentation dinner on Sunday night.

The program of events include a cocktail party followed by dinner on the first night and the presentation of trophies on the final night, while competitors enjoy a beautiful waterfront dinner at the spectacular Marina Restaurant.

This is an event not to be missed and worth making the trip to Port Hinchinbrook for. Accommodation can be arranged through Port Hinchinbrook where there is the choice between waterfront, street front and vue cabins.
