Challenging History
  |  First Published: April 2006

In 2006 the Redland Bay Amateur Fishing Club will be running their 15th Moreton Bay and Offshore Family Fishing Challenge.

The 2006 Challenge looks like being the biggest yet with sponsors and locals all supporting the event to the tune of $60,000 in cash and prizes.

The first event, the Redland Bay Offshore Challenge, was held in 1992 and attracted 238 entrants who competed for the prize pool of $25,000. A shotgun start saw 115 vessels navigate the South Passage Bar successfully – a feat unheard of in those days. By 1993 the event had expanded to cater for inshore (Moreton Bay) and offshore anglers.

The Redland Bay Offshore Challenge is now known as the Moreton Bay and Offshore Family Fishing Challenge and has handed out hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash and prizes to competitors. The event attracts competitors from Bundaberg in the north, Toowoomba in the west and northern NSW in the south, all vying for their share of the prizes.

Local business has been the greatest supporter of this event and we would encourage any angler to support the businesses that help keep this competition running.

This year’s event will be held between June 9 through to June 12 and interested anglers can contact Don Miller on 0401 408 614 or Brett Ashcroft on 0403 249 930 for more information on the Challenge. – RBAFC
