Good cod and yellas grace anglers’ bags
  |  First Published: February 2013

With Christmas only a fleeting memory, it's time to get back on the water and seek out a mighty green fish at the home of the Murray cod, Lake Mulwala.

If early season indications are anything to go by, this summer should be a beauty in and around Lake Mulwala.

As a general observation you will catch better quality fish from the lake while the river below will produce quantity but generally of a smaller size.

Since cod opening some great reports have been about of both great size and daily captures of cod. Mick Miller and his mate had a day out landing 15 with eight of them being of legal size.

Portland boy Greg Mesley spent some time here along with mates Sprat, Gooch and Shep. They had a ball catching numerous cod for the week both lure and bait fishing. The highlight was Mezza’s 69cm beauty caught on a bit of his home made cheese kransky!

Kyle Dalrymple, a very passionate young fella from Corowa spends a fair bit of time on the lake and is rewarded on a regular basis for his efforts. His last few trips have been seeking out cod in shallower water, away from the general hustle and bustle of the many fishing and ski boats that are about this time of year. Best fish to date this season for Kyle has measured a healthy 74cm.

Ando, Jack and Ned Hunt were a happy bunch of campers who hit the river downstream earlier in summer looking to have a bit of fun with both the cod and yellas before the masses arrived. On a daily basis they were catching great numbers of fish with the majority falling to a well-placed lure. Highlight for the crew was Jack’s 56cm golden perch taken on a cast spinnerbait.

With the warm summer evenings, surface fishing has been another great option. David Rose and Ben Ross are two who have got amongst some fun top-water action. As previously mentioned walking the banks around the Kiffin area is a place that will see you in with a great chance of a fish or two.

With the competition season upon us, there are a few events coming up over the next couple of months. The first is the ever popular Lowrance Da$h 4 Cash, Feb 16-17. Following this is the “His & Hers Partners Classic” on March 2; a great day for understanding couples to share time together in the boat. To round out the comp season is the Cod Nationals, five days of serious tournament fishing for the dedicated green fish angler. It’s guaranteed that once you have fished a Cod Nationals you will never miss it again.
