Fly dominates at Toonumbar
  |  First Published: June 2012

A field of 34 anglers were greeted with clear skies and light winds for the Toonumbar Bass Electric two-day event.

Session one on Saturday proved relatively easy, with a lot of full bags caught.

The session on Sunday morning sorted out the top runners, with the field struggling in a lot of places that had been pressured earlier.

Two anglers stood out from the rest and both threw fly.

First was Denis Shaw, who used an 8wt TCR fly rod with a Striper4 fast-sink line to cast to submerged timber in the creek mouth towards the back of the dam. Shaw found the fish came easy on fly – lucky for him, because they were the only two rods on his boat!

Denis did well to paddle up the back of the dam each session and then throw fly all day.

Second place went NSWFM Clarence reporter Joe Urquhart, who also employed the fly to good effect.

Urquhart got his bag early both days by casting OSP Bent Minnows on 6 lb. Toray leader to the edges. He used fly to upgrade by casting tight to the weed edges using a custom-tied Bass Vampire fly on 10lb. Toray leader.

The big bass prize went to Peter Bostock’s 1.050kg fish that took a Squidgy Lobby under a spin jig head.

Thanks for all who turned up for a great weekend. – Adrian Melchior
