Over the last few weeks the fishing around Echuca has fired up with the most anglers landing all sorts of fish such as yellowbelly, carp and redfin.

Warmer conditions have got the yellas on the move with some nudging the 3kg mark. There’s been no shortage of redfin being caught with some thumpers amongst the big crowds of the smaller fish.

Silver perch have also made their presence known with anglers using scrubworms for bait catching and releasing them up to 42cm. The larger silvers have plenty of go in them and put a fair amount of effort in when striking a lure.

It must also be noted that the silver perch are protected in the rivers and must be released.

Although the cod season has been closed for the last three months, captures (and releases) of the green fish to 81cm have been reported with anglers using baits and downsized lures to target yellowbelly.

At the time of writing Stevens weir at Deniliquin had been producing golden perch to 44cm on live yabbies bobbed amongst snags while things had been quiet for those working lures.

The stretch of water between Mathoura and Barmah on the Murray has been fishing well for yellas. Around the start of October there was a good run on the yellowbelly with the best session producing 7 fish as well as two undersized cod. They have settled down with anglers still picking up a few fish from each outing.

Aaron and Ash form Moama had a constant day on the water landing a mixed bag of yellowbelly, trout cod, silver perch and carp while bait fishing with worms, yabbies and Chicken Chippies.

A few weeks later Aaron was back on the water with his good mate Geoff and after catching some nice yellas early, Aaron topped the afternoon off with a cod at 68cm which was quickly released.

Trolling size two Stumpjumper lures in the darker colours is working well. Brian Hinson had also found the darker coloured lures successful landing a mixture of 22 golden perch and by-catch cod in a handful of trips. Jeff a new resident to Echuca has been finding his way around the local fishing spots.

After sifting through half a dozen carp and a few silver perch, Jeff finished the morning off with a dinner plate yellowbelly measuring 50cm while fishing with scrubworms near the Echuca Road Bridge.

Below Torrumbarry Weir, yellowbelly up to 2kg have been caught on shrimp and worm cocktail while fishing from the bank. Anglers have been putting their shrimp nets in the National Channel to get their supply for the day.

Kaiden Taylor landed a couple of hefty yellas on the cast with a 58cm and 62cm for the afternoon being the biggest.

Box Bridge on the tail end of Kow swamp continues to produce plenty of redfin on both bait and lures.

Nightcrawler worms have worked well but are very popular with the carp while Conrad Farrell landed a couple of undersized yellas while casting spinnerbaits with white skirts below the regulator.

The Goulburn River gave up some nice golden perch for one lucky angler who bagged 5 in three and a half hours, with scrubbies were most successful bait.

Warmer conditions has seen more golden perch caught on both lures and bait in the Echuca area.
