Easter Bream Classic 2011
  |  First Published: July 2011

A gorgeous Good Friday greeted anglers in the 2011 Gold Coast Sportfishing Club Easter Bream Classic. The 32 teams took to the waterways of the Gold Coast to chase their bag of five bream, with a good turnout of junior anglers in the mix.

The event’s laid back feel certainly didn’t deter anglers from chasing the great prizes on offer. Top prize was a Lowrance HDS 5 Combo and $650 cash, that went to Team Bad Company consisting of family members Daniel Folley and his uncle Phil Shaw.

Daniel is a regular bream fisho and a GCSFC member and he convinced his uncle to join him for a fish on Good Friday. Daniel landed a cracker 1.16kg bream in the first 15 minutes of the morning which set up the day nicely for the pair. They then worked their way up the Nerang River to gather their 2.92kg bag of 5 fish, stopping off at canal entrances, rock walls and bridge pylons. They fished Gulp Prawns and Z Man Shrimps on 1/28oz TT jigheads and a 1-3kg Pflueger Trion and 1500 Daiwa Caldia spooled up with 3lb Fireline and 4lb Sunline leader. Daniel also took out big bream with the fish he bagged on his fifth cast of the day winning a TT Lures/Z Man Plastics prize pack valued at $450.

Second place went to Team Two Chippies, Nick Whyte and Wayne Peeters, who were wrapped to take away the new model Lowrance Elite 5 DSI combo unit and $450 cash.

Our juniors had a fantastic day all going home with prize packs thanks to TT Lures, Z Man Plastics and Berkley. It was great to see so many smiling juniors in the field and young fellas like Mick Horn’s son Kyron fish their first competition. Kyron and his proud Dad fished hard to take out 5th place and you couldn’t wipe the smile from Kyron’s dial. The Junior prize of a day’s fishing with Dizzy Borg was won by little James Britton.

The Gold Coast Sportfishing Club would like to thank club member Stephen Wilson for his efforts behind the scenes to organise this year’s sponsors. Once again every competitor went home with something so a big thank you to; Lowrance, TT Lures/Z Man Plastics, Berkley, Engel, Battery Traders, Gold Coast Fishing Tackle your support of this event and the club is greatly appreciated. Thanks also to club members and the committee for their support of the event.

The events like the Easter Bream are classic events ensuring anglers are eligible for Classic Grand Final places and points. – Christine Hunt
