A lot is written about how to catch major target fish species, and for good reason. We all want to catch more and better fish. Catching these larger fish often requires the use of live bait. While rigging these baits is often described, catching, keeping and transporting of the bait is an art that is often ignored. When looking for a quiet place to dangle a line during August, most people think of heading for the coast as the river trout season in Victoria is officially closed until September. Happily this closure only affects the state's rivers, and keen freshwater anglers can still fish for trout in most lakes, dams and reservoirs.

Winter is a time when many trout anglers pack away their gear. For most it is an enforced lay off as there is a closed season in place for trout in streams and rivers in Victoria over the winter period. Happily, a few rivers in the state remain open due to their classification as sea run trout fisheries. A good place to find such winter trout options is around Warrnambool, in the southwest of the state.
