Look out! We’ve got a floater
Greg Clarke | July 2017

There will be pretty much only one thing on most anglers’ minds this month and that is snapper. The cuttlefish will be in full spawning mode and many will die and float to the surface after their big effort, and many more will be predated on by other species and eventually find their way to the top.

Bream don’t mind the cool weather
Greg Clarke | June 2017

Luckily there are some good bream around this month.

June is a tough month to fish on all fronts. The weather can be less than kind, it is mostly cold and we are between concentrations of fish. Being ever-optimistic, there is always something you can glean from the lean times.

Winter sorts the men from the buoys
Johnny Nolan | June 2017

Graham Townsend from Wattle Grove caught this cracking 4kg salmon in Jervis Bay on a recent holiday to the Shoalhaven.

Welcome to winter everyone! Cold, windy, and wet – there’s so much to look forward to. Winter can be the make or break season for fishos. It sorts the smart from the not-so-smart and the crazy from the insane. A warm bed, snuggles with your partner and bacon and egg breakfasts seem much more inviting than heading out in cold westerly winds with a wind chill factor in the minuses. Call me soft, I don’t care.

Smaller snapper like this should be pretty common over the reefs this month.

The sun goes down early and gets up late this month and it can be cold at both times. Don’t let that stop you from hitting the beaches. We get some nice balmy days as well and these are even better to chase excellent whiting along one of our golden beaches in the Illawarra.

Great fishing continues into May
Johnny Nolan | May 2017

A monster flatty of 90cm caught by local angler Harry Harnwell. A big 10” soft plastic was the undoing of this fish.

It’s May! May the fishing be good, May the weather be good, and most importantly May I take this opportunity to wish all the mums out there a happy Mother’s Day for the 14th of May.

Pelagics popping up in cool, calm water
Greg Clarke | April 2017

Good-sized tailor are all along the coast and there are even more in Lake Illawarra.

April may not be quite as good as March, but it’s still one of the best fishing months of the year. The days are warm after cooler nights and light south westerlies in the mornings make the warm ocean waters calm and enjoyable to fish. Even better, we have four days off over Easter. Throw in ANZAC day, after the dawn service, and you have a whole lot of extra time to fish, and the fish are still there and raring to go.

Beat the crowds – hit the water now
Johnny Nolan | April 2017

Chris Neville and Jarrod Humfrey with a pair of wash-caught reds.

If February and March are anything to go by, April is going to be an absolute cracker! We’ve had some awesome offshore fishing as well as some very impressive inshore and estuary fishing. And not just line fishing – crabbing for both blue swimmers and muddies has been good. The divers are also reporting good numbers of crays in close around the rocks, provided you don’t mind jumping in with the blighters! So let’s get into it!

A few mack tuna will be around. These fish are great fun on light line and awesome bait.

With so many options available, where do you start? You could fish in a puddle on the side of the road this month and catch fish.

Gavin McCallum owner of McCallums Tackle World Nowra with a pair of mahimahi also caught off the floating pallet. They managed around 20 fish over 1m but only kept what was needed for a feed.
