Mates Day
  |  First Published: August 2009

Can you believe it is that time of year again? For those of you that haven’t heard of Mates Day, it is the annual event where Futurefish Foundation hosts a big day of fishing for people with disabilities.

The day involves around 90 volunteer boat owners who take out nearly 200 people with disabilities for a mornings fishing and then enjoy a great BBQ lunch and brag about the mornings catch.

This years’ event is on Sunday 18 October at Patterson River. The day starts with boat owners arriving at 7.00am, guests arriving at 8.00am and fishing from 9 to 12 noon. Once again, Hobsons Bay Sport and Game fishing club will be cooking a free lunch for all participants to enjoy when they return from a great mornings fishing.

We need BOATs

If you own a boat more than 5.5 metres in length and would like to participate in this years event, please give the Futurefish Foundation office a call on (03) 9773 8613 or email --e-mail address hidden--

This year we are celebrating Mates Days’ 10th birthday so come along and enjoy this very special event.

You may recall back in May, Futurefish Foundation conducted two forums on marine stocking Victorian coastal waters. Well now, Fisheries Victoria has picked up the baton and has commenced the next stage of work to implement a marine stocking program. At a recent meeting on the subject, Futurefish, VRFish and several recreational anglers discussed with Fisheries Victoria staff what is needed to get a program up and running in Victoria. There are many issues that will need to be considered before a program is implemented including legislative requirements, environmental issues and biological security of wild fish.

Fisheries Victoria will use the NSW program managers and researchers to help with the Victorian program setup. A big thankyou needs to go to guys such as Garry Kerr and Shane Korth from Victoria’s west coast who has the vision for how this program can benefit recreational fishing communities in Victoria.

Did I just hear you say “What’s Twitter”? Twitter is taking the world by storm and by joining Twitter and following Futurefish Foundation, you will get all the up to date information on what is happening at Futurefish, as it happens. http://twitter.com/Futurefish_Fdtn
