Back to the good old days

Well, trout season has closed now, however the trout fishing has been exceptional over the past month.

Traralgon Creek

The recent amount of rain has bought the creek back from the dead. It really is back to its good old self for the most part. There’s plenty of small trout in the 20-30cm range, but what’s surprising is the number of 35cm plus trout that are in the creek, especially after what the creek went through last year with the fires.

It’s great to see all the trout anglers out in force as well and all methods are catching plenty of fish. The fly fishers were still doing well at the end of the season with small hopper patterns believe it or not, and the humble bead head nymph of course has been the favourite.

A bunch of worms floated down the river was very effective, you just had be sure not to anchor the bait in one spot for too long; either a slack line or split shot rig was the best. The spin guys cleaned up with Celtas and Rapalas, especially now that we have good flows of water.

Morwell River

This river has been the go to stream for Gippslanders. It has been so consistent this year and has held some really good-sized trout. The average has been 25-30cm however I have seen plenty of 40cm plus sizes this year, especially during the last couple of weeks of the season.

The trout have been spawning now for more than a month, which we haven’t seen for a few years, so there should be really good recruitment next season and there should be plenty of trout in our small streams for years to come.

Aberfeldy River

It’s been great to hear some great fishing reports from this river. Lately it has looked like a million dollars with good crystal clear water flows. There’s load of creek-sized trout ranging from 25cm and up and there has even been the odd 1kg brown trout caught.

Celtas work a treat, but plenty of soft plastics anglers have been hitting this stream and managing at least a dozen trout or more per session.
