Classic Cod Fishing on Mulwala
  |  First Published: January 2010

Some mighty green fish are kicking along summer nicely.

The lake has been fairly dirty making things a bit harder for the lure angler while the bait boys have been picking up fish more regularly.

There have been numerous massive Murray cod reported and none better than the absolute monster landed by David Bumpstead and Bob Peric.

The boys had fished the Cod Classic but decided they wanted fishing with a bit less boat traffic. David and Bob landed the largest fish I have ever seen come out of Mulwala measuring in at a whopping 135cm and estimated to weigh around 110lb in the old scale.

This beast was taken on a trolled 120mm fluro pink AC lure. To the boys credit it was released so some other lucky angler may have the pleasure of tangling with it one day.

Next best fish to make an appearance was landed by George Jovanovic, the most productive big fish angler from the local area. George picked up a beautiful 123cm model while trolling around the Woodlands area of the lake. It was caught on his son’s homemade lures. Again this fish was released so well done George.

Rod Groaters backed up his effort of guiding the winner of the Cod Classic with his own cod that measured a neat 88cms. This gem was taken on a cast Bridgewater spinnerbait.

I was recently lucky enough to spend a couple of night fishing the surface with good mate Dean Goodsell and my young fella Cooper. Between us we managed to land three fish with 64cm being the best. The most productive methods were using poppers and buzz baits.

The Engel Fish-A-Rama took place with 100 competitors taking part. The consistent Mick Miller landed a 70cm cod to take out the Adult Champion prize while Mate Colina landed a 68cm beauty to get the chocolates for the juniors.

Below the weir, many small fish have been taken by those using bait. Silver Perch have moved into the area and along with the small trout cod, can become a real pest when it comes to bait pickers. One product I recommend is a bait sock made by SMH Angling Solutions that will save you a heap of money on bait.

A few young locals, Reed, Eli and Josh lucked upon a hot bite and landed 25 cod between them in a three hour period. The best came in at 61cms. They were all caught on cast spinnerbaits.

February

The lake will clear up with water visibility on the improve. Those who put in the early morning starts to avoid the ski boats will be rewarded. Casting and trolling hardbodied lures, spinnerbaits and lipless crankbaits will see you in with the best chance.

Calm warm nights could see you rewarded with a cod or two off the surface with the Kiffin’s area being the best bet.

Several places are still available for the ever popular Lowrance Da$h 4 Ca$h super series being held over the weekend of 20th & 21st Feb. Get in quick if you are interested in taking part. Give me a call at Lake Mulwala Fish Camp & Ski to book your place.
