Team Bream it On Conquers Trout Classic
  |  First Published: December 2009

Team Bream it On conquers the weather and just wins a tight Arthurs Lake round of the Tasmanian Trout Classic.

In weather that could only be described as appalling, 18 teams headed off the start line at the Arthurs Dam Wall into a deluge of rain, thunder, lightning – but thankfully no wind.

As all teams were on the water 20 minutes before the scheduled, we headed off into the fog and steady rain. Most teams spread out, and without the prospect of strong winds all teams were able to heads straight o their ‘go-to’ spots.

By 9am it was apparent that the weather forecast was correct, and steady rain turned into thunder and lightning accompanied by torrential rainfall.

This didn’t seem to worry the fish however, and most teams continued to catch trout.

Fifth placed Team Juicy Isle braved the conditions in their small boat, notching 14 fish with an overall length of 593cm. Using mainly Black and Gold Berkley T Tails, Team Juicy Isle fished deep and slow.

Fourth Placed Team Specialist Outboard Service fished a mixture of fly and lure, with 10 fish falling to the deep fished wet flies of Grant Garwood. In keeping with the Black and Gold combination, the successful flies were Woolly Buggers, heavily leaded and fished on a type 5 sinking line.

Round One winners Team Spirit of Tasmania finished third this time, bagging 19 fish. Interestingly the top three teams all caught 19 fish. Spirit of Tasmania used the trusty Black and Gold T Tails in combination with the new Berley MF50 soft plastic vibe.

Team Cranka had the hard luck story of the tournament, with a kicker 50cm+ fish jumping off the brag mat before the scoring photo could be taken. If this fish had stayed put then Team Cranka would have pipped eventual winners Team Bream it On.

Most of Team Cranka’s fish were taken on Berkley Gulp Smelt in 3” as well as a few on the new Cranka Vibe.

However it was team Bream it On of Nigel Harris and Steve Bond that took Round 2 honours. Both of these anglers have tasted success in previous Trout Classics, and this experience shone through as they registered 19 fish for a total length of 825cm.

Most fish were taken on the Berkley Black and Gold T Tails fished very deep. Harris commented in the post event interview that rarely did the fish follow too far off the bottom, although several fish took the lure multiple times before the hook could be set.

For their win Team Bream it On received $500 cash, two Team Diawa Tierra reels and a Spotters sunglasses prize pack.

Overall 169 fish were caught for a total length of 73.00 metres – averaging 43.19cm. Longest fish was a 56cm cracker caught by Nigel Harris.

This event could not have been the success it was without sponsors Spirit of Tasmania, Daiwa, Berkley, Tasmanian Devil Lures, Ecogear, Spotters and the Great Lake Hotel.

A big thanks to all companies that sponsored teams in this years event, their generous support goes a long way to making the event a success.
