Simply the best beaches

With Spring is the start of a new season and sooner or later, ocean currents will start to change and warmer water from the north will bring back the game fish.

The estuaries will begin to liven up with flathead coming back on the bite as the water warms. At present the water temperature has been as low as 12º offshore and even cooler in the estuaries.

The best fishing at the moment has been off the beaches.

Sizeable salmon have been pulled from the beaches from the Pinnacles through to Wonboyn, with fish also being caught from the washes around the headlands.

Salmon are a little unpredictable and inconsistent, showing up one day and not the next, but once located, the action can be hectic.

Tossing metal lures into the school and retrieving fast is a sure-fire way of getting fish.

A few big tailor are about on the beaches and entering the estuaries, with some good fish caught in Wonboyn Lake.

The really clear water can make it tricky catching tailor, but best results are usually had not long after sunrise and again around dusk.

Trevally are around the weed edges in the channel. The clear water can make fishing frustrating because the fish can often be seen but may not be keen to be caught.

Offshore, the best action is still for snapper with good fish caught on fresh bait and soft plastics.

Plenty of smaller fish to around 1kg have been caught along with better fish to 3kg.

As the water warms, more fish like kingfish, tiger flathead and sand flathead will come on the bite.

Gummy sharks don’t mind the cooler water and there have been a few caught recently.

The rivers are still waiting for much-needed rain to get things flowing again. A bit of colour in the water is needed to kick-start the fishing.
