McLoughlins Beach Boat Ramp Concernes
  |  First Published: August 2009

On 4th August a meeting was held in regards to the upgrade and maintenance of the Mcloughlin’s beach boat ramp.

Many people attended including Federal Member for Gippsland - Darren Chester MP, VRFish Representative Ben Scullin and members of the local and regional business community.

As it stands, the McLoughlin’s beach boat ramp is listed in the Gippsland Coastal Boating Action Plan (2002) as a regional level facility. However, the Wellington Shire wish for the Mcloughlin’s Beach boat ramp to be delisted to the lowest level of priority meaning that there will be NO maintenance and NO upgrades of the boat ramp now or in the foreseeable future!

This is an outrage, as data gathered through surveys over the past few years have shown that between 3000 and 5000 boats use this boat ramp every year! Despite this, the Wellington Shire still thinks that McLoughlin’s should be granted the lowest priority, which means it will just degrade to the point it will be deemed unsafe and then it will be closed and/or demolished.

If anglers and boaties do not want this to happen, YOU MUST write a letter to MP Darren Chester and post/email him a letter of the importance of this boat ramp and how this will affect you.

This is especially important for businesses in the area; YOU MUST send a letter to Darren Chester saying how this will affect you financially otherwise there’s nothing more that he or Ben Scullin of VRFish can do!

This is a big and important issue: if you don’t want to lose this boat ramp, you must write a letter so that Darren Chester can show these to the Wellington Shire councillors so that they realise that if this boat ramp is removed off the Gippsland Boating Coastal Action Plan, that they will not be in power after the next election!

The McLoughlins Beach boat ramp brings in approximately $500,000+ to the Regional economy each year, not to mention the great fishing, but we must let the Wellington Shire know this for any action to be taken, otherwise McLoughlins Beach will fall off the map as one of South Gippsland’s best boat based fishing locations.

Feel free to email me (Will Thompson) your letters to Darren Chester, on --e-mail address hidden-- and I will forward them to him.
