In fine conditions on the expansive waters of the Gold Coast, 23 teams signed up to take part in the ABT Flathead Trial on Sunday February 9.
Much like the Daiwa Barra Tour, the flathead teams try to catch their best five flathead and measure them on brag mats and take a photo, which is then handed into officials at the end of the session. The flathead is released immediately unharmed to fight another day.
The competition’s victors by a mere 2cm were Team Plastics Paranoia, consisting of Matthew Kair and Christian Pulvirenti, with a full limit for 235cm.
The pair had never fished an ABT tournament before and after a delayed start, due to not having their boat in the water for check out and take off, the duo headed to the northern end of the Gold Coast Seaway. They drifted along the wall in 4-5ft casting ahead to the shallows and drop-offs with a hopping retrieve.
Arming themselves with a Shimano Fireblood combo and Strudwick Sic Stik, Sahara reel combo, Matthew and Christian used 10lb Berkley Fireline and 17lb Vanish leader.
Choosing to throw 3/8oz TT and McCubbin jigheads, Plastics Paranoia rigged these with the new Atomic 4” Guzzlers. When quizzed on what colour did the trick, the boys remarked, “Any and every colour in the range seemed to work”.
Walking away with a new Engel Fridge for their troubles, you couldn’t wipe the smiles off their faces as the pair had a great introduction to tournament fishing.
The big flathead was hotly contested with two teams scoring a 60cm specimen to tie for the prize. Team Bit Shaky and Mobile Boat Canopies each received a $50 Battery Traders Superstore voucher.
Team Bit Shaky was fishing near Tipplers when they caught their 60cm fish on a 4” Tropic Angler Shad in pink candy colour rigged on a 1/4oz jighead. Whilst team Mobile Boat Canopies were up the Coomera River and landed their specimen on a 70mm Squidgy Fish in grasshopper colour rigged on a 1/12oz jighead.
With plenty of refreshments and random giveaways for all, it was a successful weekend. ABT would like to thank our sponsors and competitors for contributing and hope to have more flathead styled events in the future.
