For the fourth consecutive year, the Hay Lions Football Club will be holding a Catch and Release Fishing Competition on the weekend of February 14/15. It’s the perfect excuse to enjoy the hospitality of Hay, on the banks of the majestic Murrumbidgee River, while fishing for Murray cod and golden perch. Not to mention that you’ll be giving yourself a chance to share in $20,000 worth of prizes.
Early bird registrations close on January 30 (which gets you in the draw for a prize) but you can also register on site on the Friday night (February 13). Competition headquarters are at the Four Mile Reserve on the Maude Road, and competitors are able to fish for 11km upstream or downstream of this point. The competition starts at 6.30am on the Saturday and closes at 11am on the Sunday. It is catch and release only, and all fish must be caught using legal methods as defined by NSW Fisheries.
The major prize is a 4.3 Sea Jay boat and 30hp Yamaha outboard, complete with trailer, safety gear and colour sounder. A barbeque will be operating for meals, plus the entry fee of $50 for senior (open) competitors includes a sit down meal on the Saturday night. Junior entry is only $10, but does not include the meal. There will be a free shuttle bus operating throughout the reserve on both Friday and Saturday nights, getting campers to the office and barbeque site.
Funds raised will go towards supporting the Hay Lions Football Club, but 25% of proceeds also go towards restocking the Murrumbidgee River – a very worthy cause.
