Tourist season winds down
  |  First Published: May 2008

The tourist season has really started to wind down as the cooler Winter weather starts to makes its presence felt.

This time of year we start to get those beautiful still days that make boating offshore a great option.

Not only is the weather at its best, so too is the fishing. Striped tuna, albacore, striped marlin and kingfish are all available, but it is the yellowfin tuna that are the main target.

Boats fishing closer to shore around the headlands have been catching big bags of fish as the abundant baitfish fire things up. Kingfish are being caught with great fishing still on offer before the Winter cold really sets in.

Snapper should start to fire up as the water cools down over the coming months and this is the time when the trophy snapper put in an appearance.

The beaches and headlands in the Eden area have been fishing well lately for salmon. Some big fish are being caught on bait and lures with the biggest fish weighing around 3kg.

High tide is the best time to fish the beaches with the fish holing up on the rocky headlands around the low tide. The coming months should see some great tailor caught from the beaches and in the estuaries, too.

Wonboyn has fished well of late with the entrance area fishing really well for yellowfin bream and sand whiting. A good bait to use in this area is the beachworm, which can be caught at Greenglades.

Flathead and bream have been caught on baits and lures with the bream found around the oyster leases and structure in the river and the flathead on the flats and near weedy areas.

Boats have been heading out through the bar on high tide when the sea conditions have allowed. These intrepid anglers have been taking good catches of sand flathead with the odd gummy shark thrown in to spice up the day.

Fishing in the Kiah River has been fun with quality bream and the odd flathead being caught at the entrance area. Live nippers and fresh prawns have been the best baits here. Fish around dawn and dusk for the best action.

Around the highway bridge over the Nullica River is a good spot to have a fish at the moment. The bream have been very keen on the nippers that you can pump right near the fishing area.

So don’t miss out on the changeover period for fishing around Eden. If you are keen on an offshore gamefishing experience you can have it, but if you just want to poke around the estuaries then there are plenty of options there, too.
