PRFMA celebrates 10 years of stocking
  |  First Published: November 2003

THE PINE Rivers Fish Management Association (PRFMA), which carries out fish stocking activities at Lake Samsonvale, is a voluntary community-based stocking group established under the encouragement of the Queensland Government’s Recreational Fisheries Enhancement Program.

Since 1993 the PRFMA has released over one million fingerlings, comprising Australian bass, golden perch, silver perch, saratoga, Mary River cod and snub-nosed garfish.

To help raise funds for stocking, the Association approached the owners of the lake, the South East Queensland Water Corporation Ltd. (SEQWater), to allow boating access under a permit scheme. The funds raised by this scheme have now allowed the PRFMA to establish better facilities at the access site, including a boat ramp, toilets and picnic tables. Boral Quarries, Petrie, has provided tremendous support in establishing these facilities.

A grant from the Gambling Community Benefit Fund has enabled the purchase of equipment to maintain the access area. While this area is a focus of activity for the association, other activities, such as the establishment of breeding habitats for Mary River cod, ensure good fishing is available for all members of the public, not just boating permit holders.

The PRFMA participates each year in community activities in the region. These include fishing clinics for kids, environment awareness days and local shows.

To enable the association to continue its valuable work, additional funding sources need to be found. Corporate sponsorship is one way of involving the local business community in an activity which provides lasting benefit for the area, and the PRFMA would appreciate any offers of support.
