The Tin Can Bay Sports Fishing Club held its first junior event in Les Lee Park, Norman Point on Easter Saturday.
The event was rated a huge success by all involved, with 24 children aged from 4 to 17 coming from as far as Gympie, Maryborough, Paradise Point and Bracken Ridge. Six species of fish were bought to the live weigh-in, these were flathead, whiting, bream, snapper, flounder and stingray.
The Overall Champion was Deanna Beck of Cooloola Cove, and the Runner Up was Tim Bartley of Maryborough. The Ultra Junior winner was Aleisha Lambert of Gympie, and the heaviest fish winner was Jlea Robertson of Tin Can Bay. These four entrants proved that consistency and patience pays off.
Every entrant got at least one prize, with 26 prizes awarded in total.
The fishing was initially slow but as the tide receded, things improved with several fish being weighed in quick succession. A late afternoon storm saw the event finish earlier than expected and the parents and children all enjoyed a free sausage sizzle and drinks.
A special thanks must go to sponsors Ian and Elizabeth Beckford of Cooloola Auto & Marine Supplies, Steve and Elona Walker, Troy and Tina Anderson of Barnacles Café & Boat Hire and the members of TCBSFC, especially James Matts and David Pugsley who donated six lures each.
