Team Fish Brain win Gold Coast Easter BREAM Classic

WHAT better way to celebrate the Good Friday holiday than a spot of tournament fishing? In a field of 19 boats, Team Fish Brain (Liam Fitzpatrick and Brad Dicker) topped a highly competitive field to win the inaugural Gold Coast Sportfishing Club’s Easter BREAM Classic.

The co-operative event was held under ABT guidelines on the Nerang River, based at Budds Beach, and attracted local sponsorship from Doug Burt’s Fishing World tackle store.

Weighing a team limit of five bream for 3.43kg, Liam and Brad fished the main Nerang River above the Monaco Street bridge right up to Carrara, using Berkley Drop Shot Minnows on 1/8oz and 1/16oz jigheads, 4lb Fireline and 12lb Siglon Fluorocarbon leaders. Fishing a cast out from the bank, Fish Brains targeted deeper drop-offs and waited until the bream swallowed the artificial bait before striking. They fished slow and deep.

Their outfits consisted of a Shimano 7’2” Raider rod/Stradic 1000 reel and a Daiwa Heartland X 6’ Solid Power rod/Caprice 1000 reel.

In contrast, Steve and Tim Morgan fished pontoons in dead-end canals adjacent to the same stretch of river to assemble their limit, also using Berkleys and Atomic 2” Fat Grubs. The boys used 1/16oz jigheads, 4lb Fireline and 6lb Berkley Vanish leader on Millerods Bream Busters and Shimano Sustain reels.

Ward Ellwood nabbed the biggest bream of the day and a $250 tackle voucher from Doug Burt’s Fishing World for a 1.1kg fish caught on the first cast of the day within sight of the start line.

The GCSFC would like to thank Doug Burt’s Fishing Tackle for their great support and the volunteers who helped out on the day. Next year will be bigger and better, with more sponsorships and more teams. It’ll be an annual event not to be missed. – Steve Wilson and Julian Gascoine, GCSFC
