World Championship Sooty Series kicks off
  |  First Published: April 2004

THE MACKAY Area Fish Stocking Association, in conjunction with ABT, has announced the first round of the Sooty Series to be held at Eungella Dam on Sunday April 18, 2004.

Round One of the series is being sponsored by Barra Pro Mackay, and if the tournament is as successful as anticipated this will be the first in a three-part series held in 2004 on Mackay’s prolific dams.

Barra Pro proprietor Noel Matsen has been a great supporter of MAFSA. “The tournament at Eungella will give anglers a chance to appreciate the hard work and dedication of MAFSA members who have provided this top class fishery,” he said. “I am very pleased to sponsor Round One as I know any dollars raised by MAFSA from the event will go straight back into improving our local fisheries.”

The tournament is being run by four MAFSA members and features a similar set of rules and point scoring system to that used by ABT in the BASS events. ABT representative Steve Morgan said, “Sooties are an ideal species for catch and release tournaments – they fight hard, live well in livewells and offer anglers a challenge. We’re very excited about these northern opportunities.”

For the first round there will be a prize pool of $1500. “All prizes are in the form of open orders at Noel Matsen’s Barra Pro tackle store in Mackay,” said tournament director Keith Day. “The top scoring angler gets a $500 open order and down from there to a $20 Barra Pro order for 10th place.”

Nomination forms are available from Barra Pro Mackay or MAFSA executives, and all entries to the tournament will be pre-sold. Nominations will close at midday on Saturday April 17.

The Sooty Series will be a strictly catch and release event and will feature live weigh-ins at any time from the 6am start time to minimise the stress on the fish. Only lure- and flycasting will be permitted, which will be a test of anglers’ skill and adaptability to the conditions.

“ I know the event will be well supported and am sure it will fit in with ABT’s theme of ‘Who shares wins’”, said Barra Pro’s Noel Matsen. “I guarantee every entrant will have a great time and experience exciting fishing for the huge sooties that live in the dam.”

Entry fees have been kept as low as possible and are $33 per angler. Full rules are available from Barra Pro Mackay and at www.mafsa.com. – MAFSA
