  |  First Published: December 2004

Volkswagen’s Touareg has been awarded top marks at the latest Euro NCAP barrier testing, putting Volkswagen’s award-winning 4WD at the top of its segment in terms of safety.

Touareg scored a total of five stars for frontal, side and mast impact to achieve the highest possible score. The result highlights the excellent interaction between Touareg’s strong bodyshell and standard safety features, which include two-stage front airbags, seat belt pre-tensioners on all outer seats, side airbags and curtain airbags.

In Australia, the Touareg was awarded the 2003 4WD of the Year by Overlander magazine, joining similar awards from respected American publications Motor Trend and Car & Driver.

Features include a six-speed automatic with Tiptronic, 4XMOTION permanent AWD, torque split up to 100% variable to front or rear axle, transfer box with low off-road ratio, central differential equipped with an electronically-controlled multi-disc clutch with 0-100% locking action, cruise control, trip computer, two-zone climate control, multi-function steering wheel and a Delta sound system (10 speakers).

Providing power for the performance in the V6 is a highly efficient powerhouse: 162kW, 305Nm at 3200rpm, 100km/h in 9.9 seconds and a top speed of 197km/h.

Priced from $69,900 (plus dealer delivery and on-road costs), the six Touareg models offer a choice of V6 and V8 petrol engines plus five cylinder and V10 turbo-diesel powerplants. – Volkswagen Group Australia
