They’re all biting
  |  First Published: November 2005

With the longer, warmer days ahead this is one of the best times of the year to be wetting a line.

As the water warms and the fish hit their comfort levels, they really come on the bite.

The local beaches have been yielding some salmon and tailor with a few yellowfin bream starting to liven things up.

The rocky corners of the beaches are the most productive for the bream, with the best fishing when there is a high tide around dawn or dusk. Fresh bait, especially worms, has been the way to go.

Snapper, morwong, trevally and leatherjackets are being caught on the inshore reefs and sand and tiger flathead assure a good feed for those wetting a line on the flattie grounds.

It won’t be long before the kingfish turn up in numbers, making for some exciting fishing.

The fishing well offshore will start to improve with yellowfin tuna the first to appear once the current starts pushing.

Fishing in the local rivers is starting to really fire up with flathead moving into the shallower waters and sunbaking to recharge their batteries. The north-facing flats warm up first, providing the best action with soft plastic lures and live mullet.

Black bream in the upper reaches will begin to spread out far and wide and start to feed now that their spawning run is over. With the warmer water more to their liking, the yellowfin bream will become more active as well.

This is a good time of year for jewfish, with the entrance to the Kiah River often a reliable producer. Fishing for jewies during the day with soft plastic lures seems to be more productive prior to Christmas than it is through late Summer months.

With bass season around the corner, rain is needed to get the rivers flowing so these fish can move to their Summer haunts.

The fishing in Wonboyn Lake has really picked up, with black bream in the river providing some good action on squirt worms and nippers.

Flathead fishing is on the improve in the lake and the river. The key is to keep on the move until you find the fish, then slow down and fish the area thoroughly. Estuary perch will fire up prior to Christmas and provide some good sport on lures.

The beach fishing around Wonboyn has been slow, with salmon and tailor around the lake entrance at the top of the tide.
