The hibernation ends

As this issue of NSWFM hits the stands it will be school holidays in NSW and there will be many more anglers out there trying for a fish or two.

This is usually a time when I come across boat trailers sitting damaged on the roadside after too little maintenance over the Winter. It is also a time when many anglers will take their fishing gear out for the first time in many months. Whether it is your boat, trailer or fishing gear, you should check it out before you rush out and try to use it.

About now there should also be plenty of new rods, reels and accessories in your local tackle shop after the August tackle industry trade show so hop in and check out the new goodies.

Not all anglers fish year-round so when the weather warms up many start to think of where they should go. That depends on whether you have a boat, the time you have to spare and your finances.

When I go away on holiday with the family I always check to see if there are any charter or guide operations in the area. Booking a charter, even in your home area if you haven’t fished for some months, will provide a great day out on the water and a feel for what is around.

Early this month bream, whiting and flathead start to appear in numbers at the entrance to Botany and Bate bays, the inshore reefs, beaches and rocks. Offshore there are surface fish like bonito, tailor, salmon, striped tuna and kingfish.

A session over the many reefs off Sydney can yield snapper, morwong, silver trevally, leatherjackets and pigfish.

If you are planning on your own outing, here is a list of places and species I fished for last October.
