Snapper is the word
  |  First Published: August 2005

Around here the word on everyone’s lips is snapper.

Anglers have experienced some great fishing along the whole coast and the inshore reefs around the Eden area is no exception. These fish are falling to a number of techniques, the most effective of which has been anchoring in close and sending an unweighted bait or lightly-weighted soft plastic through a berley trail.

Fish to 3kg have been fairly common and a large run of snapper from 1.5kg to 2kg make for great eating.

Many good fish have been falling to anglers fishing off the rocks with the peak time early in the morning.

Plenty of quality tiger flathead have been caught along with a few nice sand flatties. The fishing inshore should remain much the same for some time yet with another peak around the next full moon.

The game fishing around the continental shelf has all but finished with the odd yellowfin persisting.

Somewhere out there should be southern bluefin tuna because this is the usual time they turn up. The hot spot is usually wide of Jervis Bay around the Tasman Front.

The beach fishing has been excellent with plenty of good catches of salmon to 3kg and tailor to 2kg, with most fish around a kilo.

Yellowfin bream are being caught in the same gutters and where rock meets sand.

ESTUARY TAILOR

The Wonboyn and Kiah rivers have had some good schools of tailor paying visits with early mornings fishing best. Get among them with metal lures.

Bass poppers worked really slowly have also been dynamite for tailor with the odd bream getting in on the act, much to the surprise of the lucky anglers.

The odd flathead is still being caught with lure anglers having to work their plastics slower than normally to get results.

Plenty of badly-needed rain recently will benefit the rivers and some creeks that have been dry for some time have started to flow.

The bass will enjoy the river rise, allowing them to make their annual move towards the brackish water for spawning.

Silver trevally turn up in the rivers in big numbers at this time of year. Fishing lightly-weighted plastics around the weed beds can often provide great sport.

Few fish can pull as hard as trevally. Bait anglers have had good success using nippers or sandworms fished with a light sinker.
