Casuarina Beach Greenback Classic
  |  First Published: August 2004

MORE THAN 800 anglers fished the 2004 Casuarina Greenback Classic, making it a welcome return to the tournament scene for many beach fishing enthusiasts.

Tailor weren’t the only eligible prize species, with anglers targeting bream, whiting, dart, jew, flathead, tarwhine and luderick. Each species category was divided into junior, ladies, veterans’ and men’s divisions, with an abundance of prizes for young and old. All money raised was donated to the Tweed Volunteer Rescue Unit and Cabarita Beach Life Saving Club to help them to continue their valuable services to the community.

Major prizes were donated by Casuarina Beach, Tweed Heads Bowls Club, The Good Guys, Wilson’s Displays, North Star Resort and many other generous sponsors.

The weigh-in attracted over 1000 spectators and competitors. A great cheer went up for Ritchie Reisenweber, the winner of the veteran section and overall tailor winner, when his big greenback dropped the scales to 5.24kg. George Gravvanis won the men’s section with a 4.902kg tailor, while Noleen McAndrew weighed in a 2.711kg tailor to take the women’s section. The junior section was dominated by Ben Teitzel, who took first and second place with a pair of tailor weighing 2.101kg and 1.996kg.

Other impressive catches included a 2.295kg bream weighed by Darren Vanegdon and a 3.958kg flathead taken by Blake Cole. The jew section saw some great fish weighed in with a 17.93kg mulloway taken by Simon McCracken in the men’s division and John Mahony weighing a 15.92 fish in the vets’ section.

Overall winners for each section were: Josh Campbell in the juniors, Leonie Kampe in the ladies, Ritchie Reisenweber in the vets and Jarre Clare in the men’s.

The Classic was hailed as a great success by all competitors and everyone is looking forward to next year’s event. For more information on next year’s Classic contact Katherine on 07 5534 3109.
