Award-winning Honda MDX
  |  First Published: June 2004

THE HONDA MDX has won the Queensland Country Life Country Car Award for four-wheel-drives over $35,000, coming in ahead of the LandCruiser, Patrol, Adventra, Defender Extreme and Pajero. The MDX also finished second overall across all categories.

The judging panel of 24 celebrity drivers said: “With a recommended retail price of $69,990 for the automatic transmission model tested, the Honda MDX impressed every driver with its high levels of comfort and superlative interior finish, combined with good roadholding.”

The MDX has a powerful 3.5-litre VTEC V6 engine with 191kW and 345Nm of torque coupled with a five-speed automatic transmission and a computer controlled Variable Torque Management four-wheel-drive system. The system anticipates wheel slip and transfers torque to the rear wheels, providing sure-footed handling in all conditions.

Driving pleasure is augmented through a Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA), fully-independent suspension and four-wheel disc brakes with four channel ABS and EBD, F1-style drive-by-wire-throttle and synchronised front and rear climate control systems

The leather MDX interior is luxuriously appointed with tasteful woodgrain trim, a 6-stack, 7-speaker CD sound system, cruise control with steering wheel controls, synchronised climate control systems, power-adjusted front leather seats and electric sunroof. Three-row seating provides optimum comfort for up to seven passengers, and for maximum rear cargo space the third row seats fold neatly into the floor.

And now family holidays in Honda’s MDX will be easier thanks to the addition of an in-car DVD player for the rear passengers. The DVD system has a value of $3500 and is added as a standard feature, without raising the $69,990 recommended retail price.

The roof-mounted unit features a 7” anti-glare TFT (thin film transmitter) screen, two infra-red headphones, remote control, security code, game port and can play audio and MP3 CDs. The in-car entertainment system operates independently form the standard CD player and tuner audio system. An optional games power pack and carry bag allows kids to bring their game consoles and controllers, giving parents hassle-free holidays. The DVD kit can also be retro-fitted by authorised Honda dealers to MDXs already on the road.
