It wasn’t exactly perfect conditions for the ABT Bass Electric round held at Lake Gregory on Sunday 17 August 2008. However, 15 anglers braved the 15 knot wind and below 15ºC water temperature to present eight fish to the weigh-master.
The competition started an hour earlier than normal to let anglers take advantage of the early morning surface bite, and have a fighting chance against the weather. And event winner Rob Hinton took full advantage of the early start.
Hinton boated the 1.82kg Big Bass for the competition on his first cast of the day. He caught the bass on a gold Zipping Ziggy surface lure targeted in one foot of water on top of the weed beds. Later on in the morning he travelled into deeper water and targeted the weed edge in about 12ft of water and landed his second fish on a Bassman Spinnerbait avocado in 3/8oz.
Rob won the competition with two bass for a total weight of 2.645kg and using his Berkley Dropshot rod matched to a Shimano Sienna 2500 spinning reel spooled with 10lb Suffix Performance braid and 12lb Nitlon leader.
Darren Harris came in second place with two fish for a total weight of 1.437kg. Darren’s first fish was boated at 7.30am using a Bassman Spinnerbait 1/4oz with the Carl skirt colour. Darren was fishing in 5ft of water above the weed beds using a rapid retrieve back to the boat. His second fish was caught on a 3” Powerbait in pearl olive colour with a 1/8TT jighead, slow rolling the line along the weed edge in about 12ft of water.
Darren’s tackle of choice was a Shimano Raider rod matched to a Daiwa Sol 2000 reel, spooled with 4lb Daiwa braid with 10lb Vanish leader.
Other place getters were Tim Steenhuis in third position with one fish for 1.353kg. Fourth went to well known bream angler Chris Horne with one fish at 1.23kg. And the final rank went to Bass Electric series newcomer, John Dell with one fish for 0.722kg.
In total, eight fish were weighed in for a total weight of 8.709kg with the average weight being 1.080kg. Congratulations to all competitors and special thanks to the Bundaberg Sportfishing Club for their assistance at the weigh-in. All bass were tagged and released. – Gary Leather
