The Rainbow Beach Tournament is one of Queensland’s biggest family fishing competitions that is celebrated over an eight day period. And every year it is getting bigger and better with 2008 being no exception.
Competitor numbers once again exceeded expectation with an increase of 35% from previous years. The major sponsors, Mitsubishi and Signature Suzuki, rewarded the enthusiastic participants with a brand new first prize boat package worth $20,000 – doubling the winning total from last year.
As always, Rainbow Beach put on a show of great fishing and entertainment. Crowds were amused over the eight days with entertainment scheduled for during the day, weigh-in and presentation. Agro entertained both the adults and kids on kid’s day, Phippsy cooked up a seafood storm whilst the crowd tasted Jimbour Wines, Dave Downie found and disclosed some of the local fishing secrets, and the police play station and movie van kept the kids busy most nights.
Mitsubishi vehicle owners were rewarded with a few hours in the VIP tent, and were given canapés, drinks, a fishing rod and tackle pack from Jarvis Walker.
Rainbow Shores Resort ran a Golf Tournament in conjunction with the event, which provided an alternative to fishing. Golf enthusiasts were rewarded with two fantastic prizes of a holiday at the resort, and $240 cash.
Zinc FM introduced Jamie Dunn and the Zoo to Rainbow Beach at the beginning of the event, with Bilco and Phippsy doing a live broadcast from the event grounds on the last Friday. Saturday was wrapped up with a visit from the Channel 9 Chopper and the crew from the new program due to go to air next season called My Coast.
The prize pool exceeded the $100,000 mark, thanks to this years sponsors being extremely generous. The prizes included a lot of cash, fishing tackle, esky’s, sponsors apparel, VHF radios, GPS, cooking appliances, camping gear, 4WD gear, fuel vouchers, fantastic holidays, fishing charters and a whole lot more.
The kids were very well looked after with nightly prizes given at random for weighing in fish, with their very own draw down prize pool. First prize was an Allen’s surfboard and the overall winners and runners up received cash prizes with apparel at the final presentation night.
The 2008 grand prize, the Signature boat package, was won by a local fishing women, Donna Small, who was nothing less than ecstatic with her win. Second prize went to Duane Monckton from Hervey Bay and third prize was awarded to Craig Schultz from Pacific Paradise.
The event organisers are very pleased with the tournaments growing success and have decided that 2009 will now include a new category of catch and release for the flathead species. – Rainbow Beach Tournaments
