Somerset’s ‘Milk Pond Bassin’
  |  First Published: August 2008

Round 3 of the Yamaha Bassin Qld Series was held at Lake Somerset, in what could only be best described as less than picture perfect conditions for May. Fishing has been very testing on all impoundments in Queensland for some time now but that did not stop the following of anglers and their families from competing in this great Series.

There are 30 Random Prize draws to be given away at every round of the Yamaha Bassin Qld Series. Everyone is entered into the draw, and prizes include: Yamaha prize packs; Platypus Fishing lines; Berkley Prize packs; Eva Kool ice boxes; Custom made Stuuz Rodz; Gladiator Rods and Reels; Kingaroy Outdoors and Marine equipment; Goso Adventure Wear clothing; Megabass, Gamakatsu and Atomic Prize Packs; Bassman Spinnerbait Packs; Ridgeback Lures, and; Raymack Lures prize packs, along with many more prizes from the generous Sponsors.

Saturday morning saw the famous Somerset fog roll in, but it slowly disappeared around 10am. Many chose to troll and cast to the edges, because that’s about as far as you could see with 80m visibility. Nevertheless, Michael Henare had a big smile on his face when he presented his mornings catch to the weigh master with one bass for 2.64kg.

Saturday afternoon and Somerset was still a milk pond and the fishing still tough. The edges were the best method of fishing and with the fish not being aggressive, every strike had to stick.

Sunday morning was a copycat of Saturday with heavy fog lingering. However, by the 11am weigh-in, anglers had managed to find some of Somerset’s hefty fat bass. John Brider caught a respectable 2.81kg bass to top up his total bag to 3.76kg, but was pipped at the post by Steve Kanowski’s 2.90kg Big Bass for a total of 3.92kg bag.

The presentation was held at 12.30pm with great prizes and trophies awarded to all of the Top 10 Seniors, as well as the Junior and Sub Junior winners. If you would like to be part of the Yamaha Bassin Qld Series take a look at our website www.bassinqldseries.com.au – Dave Hislop
