The game fishing season has been as good as it gets and, surprisingly, yellowfin tuna and albacore are still being caught from the 60-fathom line to well out over the continental shelf.

One would think the fishing would have already come to an end but I guess that as long as the patch of favourable water hangs around, the fish will stay. With plenty of tuna over 50kg, this season has been one of the best experienced for many years.

The odd big kingfish is still being encountered by anglers fishing around Mowarrie Point with live baits enticing the bigger fish.

After a reasonable start to the snapper season things have slowed down on the inshore reefs with the majority of the snapper now being caught farther offshore. With plenty of cuttlefish to be found washed up on the beaches, we can only hope the snapper fishing improves.

Flathead have been a bit slow with anglers having to put in a good effort to get a feed.

Rock fishos are still catching some good-sized drummer along with blackfish on fresh baits of weed and cunjevoi. Those fishing with pilchards and lures have been catching salmon and tailor off the rocks and beaches.

Yellowfin bream are still being caught off the beaches along with the odd sand whiting, with beach worms being a good choice of bait.

The recent rains have got the rivers flowing nicely, which will benefit the bass as they are able to move freely from the fresh to the salt. Hopefully the rivers will keep flowing enough to allow the bass back into the upper reaches after spawning, making for good fishing over the Summer.

Wonboyn has benefited from the recent rains with the fishing picking up in the river and the lake. Some good bream are being caught on bait and lures.

Good-sized tailor have been roaming the lake with fish over 2kg caught best at first light, when they can be seen chasing bait. Metal lures and surface poppers are good to fire up the bigger fish.

Tailor and salmon are also being caught in the gutters on local beaches along with the odd good yellowfin bream.
