Winter tuna kick in
  |  First Published: August 2006

After some welcome rain on the South Coast, the high-pressure systems seem to be positioning themselves over the south-east corner of Australia, resulting in cold mornings and beautiful wind-free days.

This has allowed the bigger boats get out there off the continental shelf among the yellowfin tuna and albacore.

And with the game season just about over, it was great to see a good finish to the season. Big yellowfin were caught by those trolling skirted lures and live-baiting and cubing in a berley trail also caught plenty of fish.

Some days the fishing was magic, with boats experiencing double hook-ups on yellowfin around 50kg. Plenty of whales were sighted while travelling to the shelf and some not far from shore.

Snapper fishing has been excellent with fish to 4kg caught. Fishing from a drifting boat with big sinkers is catching fish but by far the best technique is to anchor in close and berley, drifting your bait down the berley trail.

The most productive times are around the full moon and new moon with early morning and late afternoons best. Lightly weighted soft plastics are also catching their share of fish.

Morwong are also being caught around the reefs with sand flathead and tiger flathead coming off the gravel and sand adjacent the reefs.

Salmon and tailor are being caught off the local beaches and rocky headlands with lures and pilchards working. High tide is the prime time for the beach and around low tide is a common time for the fish to pay a visit to the headlands.

Some big drummer are being caught in the washes and gutters with cunjevoi the top bait. You have to pull hard with strong gear to keep these fish from heading home.

The same washes have been the spots to fish for blackfish and the odd yellowfin bream. Winter is a good time for silver trevally with the rivers and rocky headlands around Twofold Bay worth trying.

The fishing in Wonboyn Lake has been a bit slow. With the lake now open to the ocean, some good tailor have been caught in the lake and off the beaches and good salmon are being caught off the beaches.
