Plenty of Prizes at the BP Dam Fishing Classic
  |  First Published: December 2006

The Murgon Supa IGA Bjelke-Petersen Dam Inland Fishing Classic, held on 7-8 October, was a great success.

The entry numbers were down on previous years, but 168 anglers competed and caught a total of 547 fish. 394 fish were entered in the gilled and gutted contest and 153 fish caught in the catch and release division.

Despite the dam being at 3% capacity anglers reported that there was plenty of water to fish and all fish caught were in an excellent physical condition.

A treasure chest of prizes was kindly donated by our sponsors, and without their generous support this fundraising event could not be possible.

Winners of the heaviest fish for the weekend were as follows:

Yellowbelly:1.99kg, Mark Kunde, Murgon winning a Humminbird 525x fish finder;

Bass: 1.382kg, Mary Gibson, Yarraman winning a 45L IceKool icebox from Evakool;

Silver perch: 593g, Martin McArdle, Sippy Downs winning a $100 voucher from RetraVision;

Jew (catfish): 1.756kg, Merv Fitch, Maidenwell winning a Humminbird Piranha Max 10 fish finder;

Spangled perch: 151g, Geoff Maskin winning a statue from Gone Bonkers Discounts;

Catch and Release Winner: Graham Kelly with 51 fish, winning a Plano tackle box from Mullet Gut Marine.

Junior winners were:

Heaviest yellowbelly: 1.188kg, Courtney Schultz, Acacia Ridge, sponsor Hanwood Fish Hatchery;

Heaviest bass: 0.885g, Sky Mays, Blackstone, sponsor Sunwater.

Early bird prize winner: Mark DeGaumois, Windsor.

Lucky draw $500 winner: Damien Maizey, Brisbane.

Lucky draw $540 accommodation winner: Terry Blackburn, Murgon.

Esky raffle winner: Gavin Crawford, Murgon.

Lure board raffle winner: Warren Muller, Murgon.

Of course, the event would not be a success without the participation of the anglers who come to Bjelke-Petersen Dam for the weekend. Many thanks are extended to them.

The Bjelke-Petersen Dam Fish Management Committee acknowledges the support of their many sponsors to make this event one of the premier competitions on the fishing calendar in southern Queensland.

Next year’s Murgon Supa IGA Fishing Classic will be conducted on the first weekend in October 2007. – MSIFC
