Lake Moondarra Fishing Classic
  |  First Published: October 2006

The Lake Moondarra Fishing Classic is an event that was created by the Mount Isa Fish Stocking Group to encourage keen anglers and the majority of the community to use the lake for recreational and entertainment purposes.

The first competition was held over the weekend of 12 December 1999 and was organised by the Mount Isa Fish Stocking Group (MIFSG). This particular weekend was chosen due to the favourable weather conditions during this time of the year and the warmer temperature of the water meant the lake would be active for good, quality fishing.

This year the MIFSG will be hosting the annual Lake Moondarra Fishing Classic and Lake Fun Day on 27-29 October 2006 in conjunction with Mt Isa Water. Between the Friday and Saturday competitors will patiently wait as they fish for the ‘catch’ of the weekend. This year’s competition will also include a $25,000 tagged barra.

The MIFSG sets up a weigh-in station under a marquee out at Lake Moondarra to collect and collate the data on Sunday. The weigh-in station assembled for the Fishing Classics is one of the most efficient and sophisticated set-ups in Australia.

In addition to fishing, the MIFSG also provides other forms of entertainment and recreational activities to keep anglers and patrons interested throughout the weekend. Local bands provide musical entertainment and catering facilities are set up to provide people with food and drink. Most competitors also camp at Lake Moondarra over the weekend and the MIFSG maintains the camping area to a high standard for that period.

The 2006 Fishing Classic will be one of the largest events that has been planned to date, with the addition of a Lake Fun Day at Warrina Park (located directly beside Lake Moondarra) on the Sunday. The fun day will focus on providing quality family entertainment for the community and a range of games and activities.

The Mount Isa Fish Stocking Group

The Mount Isa Fish Stocking Group is a volunteer community benefit group whose primary focus is the development of the freshwater recreational fishery in the lakes around Mount Isa.

The annual fishing competition is the primary fundraiser for the organisation and the funds raised during the event are used to purchases barramundi and sooty grunter fingerlings to stock the local dam.
