Longreach Fishing Club Inc. will host its third catch and release fishing competition on the Thomson River in Longreach on August 26 – 27.
Special guest Andrew ‘ET’ Ettingshausen has always been a passionate angler and is no stranger to finding the best angling spots in a river. Andrew and his film crew from his popular television show Escape with ET will be filming a segment about the Longreach Yellowbelly Classic whilst competing for the Champion Adult Yellowbelly Angler.
Free camping is available in designated areas along the banks of the river during the competition and the fishing is sure to attract many angling enthusiasts.
The Meet and Greet on Friday August 25 will allow people to catch up with friends, nominate for the competition, spin a few yarns and get involved with the redclaw auction and races being held, or maybe even win one of the night’s lucky draws. Local health and fitness aerobic instructors will perform a demonstration on their athletic capabilities and talented country singer Kevin Kelly will perform live.
The competition is open to boat and land-based anglers with fishing commencing Saturday at 6am and concluding at 6pm. All fish caught are to be measured in at Apex Riverside Park with the fish measuring starting at 7am. Sunday fishing times are from 6am till 12pm with presentations starting at 12.30pm where all entrants must be present to claim their prizes.
Prize categories include Champion Adult Yellowbelly Angler, Overall Heaviest Redclaw, Longest Yellowbelly, Longest Catfish, Longest Bream, Longest Barcoo Grunter, Longest Welch Grunter and Best Dressed Team of 2.
All entrants go into the lucky draws on Friday and Saturday night as well as numerous draws at Sunday’s presentations.
Included in the Adults nomination of $20 is the chance to win a Stacer 350 Seasprite boating package donated by Terry’s Marine Centre in Rockhampton. Juniors (under 16 years old) nomination of $10 gives them a chance for a $500 camping package donated by Longreach Outdoors Centre.
Friday and Saturday nights the courtesy bus will be travelling from Longreach Outdoors Centre shop to Apex Riverside Park at 6pm as well as picking up campers along the riverbanks. All campers need do is wait by the track site number for the bus to come along and you will be returned later that night.
Saturday night’s entertainment starts at 6.30pm with a Tae Kwon Do demonstration followed by redclaw auction and races, lucky draws and hand reel casting competition.
Sunday presentations are at Apex Riverside Park starting at 12.30pm following ‘Woodies Fishing Fashion Parade’ at 12.15pm.
