New junior writers
  |  First Published: July 2006

This month we introduce two new junior writers. Jaret and Jay Svensson. Their dad Col runs Fisher Boats at Bribie Island so these two young fellas have grown up with a fishing rod in their hands and a boat in their shed. In the coming months I am sure they will assist our junior anglers with valuable tips and tricks to get the most out of their fishing.

JARET Svensson

Hi, my name is Jaret and I will be doing the Junior Page with my brother Jay.

I’m 11 years old, I live on a canal and my favourite sort of fishing is reef fishing. I also love going gar fishing and going up to Mission Point camping.

We have a tinny with a 4hp Suzuki four-stroke that’s in the canal with a Navman sounder. After school I like to go fishing in the Passage flicking soft plastics. I found that you catch more fish when there’s a little bit of current and wind.

I have four rods: one for whiting fishing, two for reef fishing and one for soft plastics. When I go reef fishing I use 40lb mono for my floater rig fished on a strong but whippy Ugly Stik rod. It has a Penn 225LD attached to it. My rig on my floater is gang hooks with a joined swivel and with a 8 ball sinker.

My other reef rod is a Wilson rod. It is a stiffer rod and has 50lb mono on a Shimano TLD 25. My rig on it is a paternoster rig.

My flicking rod is a flexible Shimano Catana with 14lb Fireline, and the whiting rod I use is a Budd’s custom rod Dad gave me with 6lb line. My biggest whiting so far is 40cm.

My favourite lure is Mr Producers. I’ve caught lots of flathead on them and my biggest was 67cm. I think the best colours for flathead are red, pink, purple, blue and black. My biggest fish ever was a 15kg Chinaman fish which I caught up at 1770. I love using soft plastics and my favourite softies are Zoom Super Flukes.

JAY SVENSSON

Hi, my name is Jay, I’m 12 years old and I will be writing this article with my brother.

My favourite type of fishing is reef and soft plastics fishing. I do quite a lot of fishing with softies in the Pumicestone Passage and I tend to get offshore at least two times a month. My biggest fish would have to be a 12kg red emperor I caught off of Double Island Point.

I like to go for a troll after school in our canal for flathead. On a weekend we go up camping at Mission Point a lot and go crabbing and whiting fishing up the Passage a lot. My biggest whiting was a 41cm monster.

I have four fishing rods: two for reef fishing, one for whiting fishing and one for soft plastics fishing. My reef rods are a TLD 25 matched to a Silstar Power Tip rod and a Penn 225 with a Penn rod.

For soft plastics fishing I use a Shimano Sienna 2500 with a long flexible light fibre rod.

For whiting fishing I’ve got a long soft rod with a 5 inch Alvey with 6lb line. I’ve got a tackle box with my own tackle (Dad’s happy he doesn’t have to share his!) and my favourite plastics are Zooms in watermelon, baby bass and white ice colours. My favourite lure for mangrove jack and flathead are Killalure Flatz Rats and Nils Masters.

WHAT’S COMING UP

Each month we will talk about catching different species of fish, camping and boating. We are both looking forward to helping more juniors catch a few more fish and get hooked for life just like we are.
