Ecogear's Gavin Dunne won a hotly contested Lake Macdonald BASS Electric event on Sunday 26th March.

His first place weight of 3.02kg was shared with Steve Otto's 3.02kg, with Gav's 1.8kg Big Bass pushing Steve into second place.

Gavin and partner Col Singleton caught a total of 13 fish in the area around the Botanical Gardens. The boys caught fish early in the shallow water above the weeds, then moved to the deeper water as the morning wore on.

Using a 10-14lb Nories baitcaster rod with a Daiwa Alphas ITO B/C reel spooled with 10lb. Yamatoyo S/W PE braid and 14lb Harris fluorocarbon leader, he presented an Ecogear CK40 F07, colour 331, shallow crankbait and VT 55 and VT 65 vibration lures.

Second placed Steve Otto from Diddillibah fished the western arm near the Three Ways after successfully prefishing the area previously. Steve used a Shimano Stradic spin outfit with 14lb Fireline and 20lb Vanish leader to present a TN60 Gold Jackall to catch his bag.

In third place was Yandina's Scott McKenzie. Scott used a Daiwa Procaster Z spin rod and a Daiwa TDA 2000 reel spooled with 6lb Fireline and 12lb Nitlon leader with a brown aurora Lucky Craft LV MAX 500 to catch his 2.8kg bag in 20 feet of water in front of the Gerry Cook Hatchery in the main basin.

Fourth place went to Nerangba's Johnathon Ward, who fished the Three Ways near Steve Otto to compile his 2.34kg tournament bag. Using a 1/2oz Ayu SMAK spinnerbait slow rolled through the weeds, he presented his lure with a G. Loomis IMX CR752 B/C and Daiwa Alphas reel spooled with 10lb Bass Hard braid and fluorocarbon leader.

The final member of the top five was Burpengary's Dale Ianna, who also fished the Three Ways to catch his 2.14kg bag.

Gavin said he was delighted with his top-five win on his first trip to Macdonald, and said he was indebted to local legend Mal Favager for revealing a top fishing spot. "I would like to thank Mal for his help and most of all, the 37 anglers for taking part," Dunne said.

All of the top five anglers automatically qualified for the BASS Electric Convention, and a total of $180 and money from the BBQ was donated to the local stocking group. The next Macdonald comp is on July 30, see you there. – Mark Pertot
