On a wet and steamy day on the Tweed River, many anglers found the fishing tough with a lot of under-sized bream on offer, but it was Team Bush n Beach/Budd’s Bait & Tackle who finished the day on top.
Managing a full bag for a total weight of 2.17kg, they pipped second place BassMaster Jigheads by 10g, with a 4/5 2.16kg bag. Equipped with Daiwa Procaster rods and Shimano Straddic reels, the boys from Bush n Beach/Budd’s Bait & Tackle followed up on their successful Thursday prefish.
Fishing light with 4lb Berkley Fireline, 4lb Yamatoyo Harris leader and TT HWS jigheads they flicked their Berkley pumpkinseed 3” Gulp Minnows along the Fingal Wall and around Boyds Bay Bridge to capture their bag.
“We also used the Ecogear SX40 in colour 305,” they said after it proved itself in the prefish.
2005 BREAM Qualifying event winner Mick Horne fished with his father William as Team Bassmaster Jigheads to claim 2nd place. Using Shimano Raider and Berkley Dropshot rods with Shimano Stradic 1000 reels spooled with 4lb Fireline and 4lb Nitlon leader.
“I fished rather heavy today, along the edges,” Mick said. “Upping the weight from 1/12 to 1/8 and letting the plastic sit for a while on the bottom meant the bream would come and pick it up,” he explained.
His plastics were the Berkley Gulp 3” Fry in both watermelon and pumpkinseed colours.
The Big Bream was claimed by Team Tracker Marine with a superb 0.83kg specimen. Caught early in the day on a 3” Gulp Minnow, the boys thought they were in for a good day, but the rain arrived and changed everything.
The 3rd and final QLD Summer Session is on March 5 at the Gold Coast. The Series Polycraft prize boat will be won and is shaping up to be a great challenge.
