The Toonumbar BASS Electric event comprised two rounds fished over two days with individual winners in each round – a different approach that was embraced by competitors
In Round 1 on Saturday evening the first session saw 20 anglers start in clearing skies and a warm afternoon catch for a total of 23 fish. Most of the action was happening in the top half of the dam.
Paul Kneller topped the session with two fish for 1.8kg and Big Bass at 0.95kg.
Paul used a Smith BB Jesty 70mm jerkbait fished over weed beds about 1m of water. He used a custom Loomis C722 Baitcaster rod with a Daiwa TD Zillion and 20lb Sunline PE braid and 10lb Sun Rock leader.
Jay Gillespie came in second with two fish for 1.7kg. Jay's fish came around 5.30pm using Big River Walker and Lucky Craft Sammy 65mm topwater stickbaits over the weeds at the top of the dam, Jay used a Samurai S003 with a Penn Power spin reel and 6lb braid and 6lb leader.
NSW DPI sent two of its field staff along to gather information on fish handling and survival after catch and release. Matt and Chris held all the fish for one hour and measured them, checked their condition and then released all in top condition with no sign of stress.
Day 2 had a rather cool 5am start in complete darkness, after which 16 anglers captured 10 legal fish.
The fishing was much tougher after the barometer dropped sharply but Brenton Smith managed to lead the field with two fish for 1.65kg and Big Bass at 0.84kg.
Brenton used a Jackall SK Pop Grande over weed beds three-quarters of the way up the dam, cast by an Ian Miller Rack Raider rod and a Daiwa 2000 Sol with 6lb Sunline PE braid and 16lb Sunline leader.
Adrian Melchior came home second with 1.49kg. He fished the upper reaches for his two fish using a Megabass Samatra vibration bait in deadly black fished on a Custom Samurai S006 rod and Daiwa TD Steez reel with Unitika 15lb braid and an 11lb Aiger leader.
Many thanks to Big River Lures for the lures donated as prizes for the tournaments. Their addition to the prize pool was greatly appreciated.
