GOZINTA CHARTERS
  |  First Published: March 2006

The Tomkinson family has lived in the Sunshine Coast hinterland for over 100 years! Craig Tomkinson, has lived in the area for just on forty years, is a fisherman of rare talent who also knows the area pretty well.

Craig has been fishing the waters out from Fraser Island and Double Island Point for thirty odd years, many of those on a professional basis. He is going to share his enormous knowledge of the area by taking small groups fishing offshore in these very areas, out of Tin Can Bay.

Craig’s boat is a purpose built timber vessel that has a very roomy rear deck that can accommodate six anglers. Three or four would be easier to manage, however the vessel is licensed to carry six plus the skipper. Craig carries all the required safety gear as well as up to date colour sounder, GPS and a pair of new Yammy 60 horse fours. The fully loaded boat pushes 20 knots which is plenty in these parts.

I accepted an invitation from Craig to check out his operation and enjoyed on an overnight trip fishing about 15km off Fraser Island. Whilst the snapper seemed to have moved on, Craig and his offsider Dave put us onto quality fish before settling in for the night.

A steady stream of pearl perch, trag jew, small mouth nannygai, Moses perch, Maori cod, monster cobia and a magnificent dolphinfish kept us well and truly entertained. The dolphinfish turned up in the berley and smashed the first offering it saw. Just as quickly it spat the bait out and momentarily disappeared. It came back in a minute or so, still lit up and looking for a feed. The big dolly was offered another bait that it again immediately scoffed before all hell broke loose!

Craig is a very easy going skipper who knows his stuff. He generates a relaxed, fun atmosphere and nothing is too much trouble For a fishing charter with a difference, particularly suited to groups of four, give Craig Tomkinson a ring on (07) 5485 1609 or 0407 592729. You won’t be disappointed!
