The inaugural Wilson’s Reel Women Hunter Valley Fishing Classic was held on November 26 and 27 at Lake Glenbawn and was sponsored by L Wilson and Co. fishing tackle.
A total of 30 women in 12 teams took part in the lure or fly-only competition.
This competition was organised and run by Leeann Payne, Emma Cartwright and Steve Starling. The weather was uncomfortable and the legs of Kerryn, of Team Eagle, started out blue in the morning, turned white in the midday rain and finished the afternoon in the red.
All the women put in a great effort to travel to Glenbawn from as far as Darwin and Victoria. Caz Forrest arrived in Sydney from Darwin at 6am on Saturday and flew out at 10pm on Sunday to be back at work at 5am on Monday morning.
Most of the entrants caught fish although some couldn’t quite get to the scoring length of 30cm for bass, golden perch, silver perch and Murray cod. There were some excellent fish caught with Caz Forrest, more used to wrestling with barra and black jew, hooking a 46cm silver perch,
Karen Fontaine managed a 49cm golden perch and Fiona Little-Groves of Victorian Team Fishlips nailed a whopping 50cm bass.
Champion team overall: Skeeter, runners-up: Extreme Pussies. champion independent team: Three Little Pigs and the Big Bad Boar; champion angler: Vicki Winter (Skeeter), longest bass: Fiona Little-Groves; lowest point score: Josie (Team Eagle); hard luck story: Gone Country.
The Dash for Cash on the Sunday morning was sponsored by sportsfish.com.au with first place $750 going to team Skeeter and $250 second place to Port Stephens Wild Cats.
