HORIZON GETAWAY 570
  |  First Published: September 2007

Anglers looking for plenty of boat for their buck should take a good look at the Horizon Getaway 570. The internal volume for a 5.7m boat is impressive and the layout is very fisher friendly, with plenty of room to comfortably fish four at the reef.

The huge 2.5m beam and extra high sides certainly create a feeling of security, but the empty boat sits so high in the water, it’s almost too high. When fully laden with a crew and all the gear for a day at the reef it would sit better and also better provide that secure feeling that comes when inside a large boat.

A fold-down ladder and transom door on the starboard side maintains full transom height, while making it easy to board and alight, both on the trailer and in the water. The full width duck board and low profile side rail that wraps over the top and right down the raked rear end offers excellent security when boarding.

The rear lounge is ideal for family trips and contains a large storage box. Between the lounge and the helm there is an underfloor kill pen. An under transom, off-floor, shelf and side pockets give plenty of easy access storage, with storage compartments tucked under the helm and passenger box seats. The bolt on bait board over the motor has a built in live bait tank that can readily be plumbed or simply used to store bait out of the sun. Rod holders on both corners of the bait board can be used for storage, trolling or floating a snapper bait out the back when bottom fishing.

The twin, padded, pivoting, bucket seats are roomy and ideally placed for comfortable travel, with removable footrests for both seats. The seats also come with forward and back adjustment. The box seat mounts have out of the way storage, accessed from the front.

The dash holds standard Suzuki instrumentation, along with a sounder and marine radio in easy to reach locations. A passenger grab rail over the cabin entrance is ideal for passenger security. The passenger dash has a lockable glove box with twin fold-out drink holders.

The cuddy cab has plenty of room, with a Vee berth to crash on during an overnight trip. The centre of the Vee can be removed to house a Porta Potty if required and there is a heap of storage space under the bunks. Removing the centre board also makes access to the front hatch a lot easier. The forward access hatch is quite large, making it suitable for bigger anglers to access the nose while the little guys can slip around the side of the canopy. Security when going around the outside is a bit lacking, so I’d be using the hatch in all but the best conditions. The canopy offers good protection when the clears are zipped closed, though water does drip through the zips. Zip open windows in front of the helm and passenger seats offer good ventilation and forward vision when rolled up. The back of the canopy has a five shot rocket launcher to keep rods and reels up out of the spray.

The anchoring system is excellent, with easy access while standing in the security of the front hatch. The split bow rail feeds the anchor rope straight onto the bow roller located on the end of the bow sprit and a cross bollard is located on the front edge of the self draining anchor well for tying off. A reef pick holder comes standard and makes it easy to carry both reef and mud/sand ground tackle.

We took the Horizon out into wild conditions whipped up by a 25 knot southeaster and wakes coming off the large tourist boats as they returned to port. While the Horizon was well behaved, it tended to bob around a bit too much for my liking. It would perform a lot better when fully laden as it would sit lower in the water and cut the waves better. On a broad reach it threw a fair bit of spray but the canopy and clears kept all three of us dry.

The 140hp Suzuki four-stroke was ideally suited to the Getaway and pushed it along at a good clip without breaking any speed records. It produced 32km/h (20mph, 17 knots) at 3500rpm, 38km/h (24mph, 21 knots) at 4000rpm, 46 km/h (29mph, 25 knots) at 4500rpm, 52km/h (32mph, 28 knots) at 5000rpm, and 57km/h (35mph, 31 knots) at 5500rpm.

The Horizon Getaway 570 starts at around $48.000 and would suit the angler who is looking for a big boat on a limited budget. The layout is good and there is a massive amount of internal volume to carry plenty of gear and people. For further information contact Boat Scene on (07) 4051 4922.
