Brighton Central Angling Club Shimano Big Red Snapper Competion
  |  First Published: September 2007

For any one who believes they can catch a snapper, mark in your diary October 27 and 28, 2007, because the guys at the Brighton Central Angling Club, in conjunction with major sponsors Shimano and JV Marine World Braeside, are once again running their annual ‘Shimano Big Red Snapper Competition’.

With over $30,000 in prizes up for grabs, this snapper competition is limited to the first 300 adult entries only. All fishing in this comp is limited to Port Phillip Bay, with every fish to be presented to the weigh master whole (not gutted or mutilated). With last year’s snapper run amongst the best in living memory, the prospects for this year’s season look fantastic, so make sure you are part of all the fun.

Even if you’re not the best snapper fisho going around, The Shimano Big Red Snapper Competition is not limited to snapper only. There are also categories for whiting, flathead and garfish. With a limit of one fish per species per angler per day, you really do need to make sure the one you keep is the winning fish.

With plenty of mystery weight prizes for all species, there is a fantastic chance for every angler to win a prize. Every junior (16 years and under) that enters will receive a Shimano Big Red Show bag chock-full of great stuff to help the young ones catch some fish.

This year, for the catch and release brigade, there is a soft plastic section in which you take a photo of your fish on a brag mat prior to the fish being released, and enter the photo only. Everyone that enters is eligible to be part of this catch and release section where the longest snapper will be declared the winner. With a great trophy as first prize, this is a great initiative that every competitor should consider entering so as to further enhance our fish stocks for the future.

First prize for the heaviest snapper is $750 cash – and that is nothing to sneeze at. Weigh-ins take place between 11am and 1pm on SundayOctober 28 at JV Marine Braeside, with all competitors welcome to attend the free BBQ from 12.30 onwards. The major prize of a Quintrex boat/motor/trailer package will be conducted at JV Marine Braeside on the Sunday, so make sure you are there to enjoy all the family fun. – Phill Jones
