The 24th All Victorian Gamefishing Tournament was held recently at Port Welshpool with 51 boats and 153 anglers competing.
This tag and release tournament allows anglers to compete for limited species, in a safe environment, with radio skeds and coastal patrol on hand.
Tim Stockdale’s 222kg mako shark scored him the heaviest senior capture and the most meritorious senior categories. The fish arrived at the weigh-in station at 12:40am and 100 people turned out to watch it be weighed. The shark is a pending Victorian record for 24kg line class.
Other outstanding catches over the weekend were a 14.8kg gummy caught by Mark Daly, a 7.5kg snapper caught by Garry Turner and a 1.95kg flathead caught by Charles Ward.
Everyone who participated over the weekend enjoyed the social Saturday evening and free cooked breakfast both mornings.
This event would not be possible without the help of our major sponsors: Wild Turkey Charters, JV Marine, Crawford Marine, Wellsy’s Tackle, Alpine Country and Pier Port Hotel Port Welshpool. – Steve Marland
