Preparing for Fishing
  |  First Published: July 2007

When Dad, Jay and I go fishing we always make sure we are prepared. You need to make sure you have a first aid kit in case something happens to you, and you should check your kit regularly.

When you go fishing one of the important things you need is food and water. You should always bring a little bit extra food and water as well. You should check to make sure you have sunscreen so you don’t get sun burnt and you need a hat. We also wear long sleeve sun shirts. We always take a mobile phone so we can use it if necessary and we keep it in a safe place out of the weather.

You need to bring your rods. At home before you leave, you should check that your rods are rigged up and the knots are strong. This saves you time when you get to your fishing spot and lets you to start fishing quicker. You also need to bring your tackle box so you can re-rig your line if it snaps. Before you go fishing you need to check that you have a good supply of the hooks, sinkers and swivels that you will need for your target species.

It is a good idea to bring an esky or a cooler bag with ice so you can keep your fish and drinks nice and cool. Bait is also really important when you are fishing. You need to make sure you have fresh bait and you should have lots so you do not run out. If you still have some left you can freeze it when you get home and use it next time as berley.

A good landing net is also required, so if you catch a big fish you can get it in the boat. You should also bring a knife, scissors and pliers so you can chop your bait up and also re-rig. Extra line is also always handy.

You need to make sure you have lots of fuel and you should take a little bit extra so you do not run out. We also have two anchors so we can tie one off the transom to stop us spinning around in the wind and tide and then snagging our lines. You need to have a torch or a spotty so you can see where you are going in the dark.

We hope that some of these tips help you catch more fish and enjoy fishing more by having everything you need at hand.

Before you go fishing it’s a good idea to check that your rods are rigged up and the knots are strong. That way, when you get to your fishing spot you can start fishing right away.
